Club History

Diocesan School June 1961 and Miss Jean Scott, headmistress of Diocesan School and P.E./Hockey teacher Joan Matthews now Blackmore, called a meeting of recent school leavers in the school on Adelaide Road with a view to starting a Past Pupils’ Hockey Club.

Those present elected a committee

Chairperson – Mrs. Vic Large (Past Pupils Association)
Hon. Secretary – Ethni Seymour (Willis)
Hon. Treasurer – Hilary Heaslip (Gregory)

It was agreed that the club would be called the Old Diocesan Hockey Club but when the school amalgamated with the High School in 1974 the ‘Old’ was dropped.

The uniform chosen for the club was a white shirt, bottle green skirt (school colours) and because there were other clubs with green skirts we chose white socks with a blue striped top as the school uniform was once blue.

Diocesan Hockey Club applied to join the Leinster League and entered one team in the Minor League. The first “training session” was held on the school’s hockey pitch in Belgrave Square, Rathmines on Saturday 23rd September 1961.

It was a successful season and the side did not lose a match and consequently won the League and the Badges competition (Cup). Next season the club went for Middle League (promotion and relegation was unheard of then) and also entered a second team in the Minor League.
